Functions
Access point
The access point unit is the connection between the wireless network and
the wireline transport network. The technology utilises the IEEE 802.11b
standard for wireless networks. In an "open area" the range of
an access point is approximately 50 m, but the range varies depending on
the layout of the premises.
Access server
The access server is the middleman between the access point and the outside
world and prevents any unauthorised access. To log on to the server and
thus access the internet, you have to enter your user name and password.
PC card
A WiFi compatible PC card is installed in your notebook computer.
This enables
you to set up a wireless connection with the access point and connect to
the Internet. The card is simple to install, with no need for peripherals
or antennas. Additional software will encrypt your connection with your
company's intranet for added security.
